Mobile Laboratories to Help in Humanitarian Crisis

The Humanitarian Association B-LiFE “Biological Light Fieldable Laboratory for Emergencies” has been created from the successful B-LiFE projects which were developed during ten years with the support and funding of the European Space Agency (ESA). The B-LiFE projects were also supported by the national delegations of the member states of the consortium partners.

Space applications integrated in the B-LiFE projects

The objective of the B-LiFE ESA projects was to develop a field deployable mobile biological laboratory for rapid diagnostic testing, real time reporting and epidemiological mapping, integrating satellite telecommunication, Earth observation and Global Navigation Satellite Systems.

Operational capabilities of a mobile biological laboratory were achieved. Successful deployments were made in Guinea, from 2014 to 2015, to fight the Ebola epidemics, in Italy, in the Piemonte Region, in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemics and in training deployments with the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
